Description

This is a commissioned piece. It was planned to be the only decorative element in the interior space. The brief was to have the entire size of the piece filled with vibrant colours that set the tone and are welcoming. The piece needed to portray an organised chaos.

The collage fabric technique was perfect for this piece. It helped build up the gradation of colour from dark to light tones. The highlight was the central yellow part that depicted the abundance of sunshine. Something to remind us the importance of the solar power that is connected with all abundance of life and happiness. The yellow part then blends into greens and blues to depict the sky and the completeness of life. The vibrant colours were intermingled with coarse textures of the bark by the use of jute and silk. The coarseness of silk complimented the wave forms and added a wonderful contrast. The mosaic pieces were sewn down with a wave stitch. The entire piece has a banana fibre backing for it to hang straight and flat. The reverse of the piece is also embellished with and element of prop roots with jute strings covered in fabric ending with a tassel.

At the studio this was one of the most enthralling and enjoyable projects!
